Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

large white lumps!

Post by flash.dan »

well cutiepie for the last two weeks has had one large white lump on her back this morning ive noticed about 3 more. Bubba gets these on and off but they are always small and go away as fast as they come 90% of time hes clear. (( its not whitespot)) cutiepies lump is fairly big now and the tiny tiny ones look like blown spots if that makes sense with a little white string hanging out. I finished a 7 day melafix dose with no effect atall and just started another today after 4 day rest. i had her in a bucket last week and had a feel of the large lump and its a solid solid lump i had a little rub but nothing comes out so it doesnt have puss in it. any ideas??? i dont believe its flukes or worms as all my other fish in the tank are perfect and water is top notch 0a 0ni 10na ppm

to give you a idea the lump is about the size of the end of a ballpoint pen the small ones are so so tiny i really have to stare to see them. they are raised a good few mm im just kinda worried now as hers just keeps getting bigger and i dont want her scarred. shes eating well and ift doesnt seem to bother her atall.... even when i was poking her.

Are they spines that are irritated? If not with the description if the little white string hanging out, it sounds like some external parasite. What other fish are in your tank?
"Darwin swings...annnnnnd a miss. Boy Jim, Chuck's suffered at the plate tonight. He's 0 for 3 and I'm not sure he's recovered from that shoulder pull a few weeks ago. I'll bet the front office is re-thinking that contract."

there not on her spine just on her back in random places there are white streeks. shes in with about 60 other fish. blue acaras, 3-4 types of barb, 3-4 types of loach / botia, fire eel, pleco tetras plattys. no other fish show any symptoms atall....

like i say bubba gets them but not like this. they are fairly common in mbus from past expierences but this one spot in particular looks different.

errm yes they do look like white cotton / string coming oput of her back one big spot 3 other which are minute which i think should clear. if there is a known parasite its not affecting anything else so its very very strange

just started a treatment for Theronts using protozin. it does look like a cyst caused by Theronts but none of the other fish have it which is strange well see
