46g - Rocks,plants, arranging?

Post by Neurotic »

Quick question, I have a 46g planted tank with a few pieces of manzanita wood in it and plants. Is that enough environment for 8 dwarf puffers? or should I get some rocks in there as well? I don't want the little fellas getting bored once in there. even though I am sure they will be plenty occupied hunting snails. Debating changing the plants around to make it more clustered on the sides and more open in the middle. any ideas?

Nice tank, but I'd definitely add a lot more plants, or plants+rocks+wood if you like. You can hardly have too many plants, IMO.

And yes, 46 gallons is enough for 8 dwarf puffers, although of course larger is always better.

Look for a really nice centerpiece, then arrange your plants around it. I have 3 pieces of driftwood that I put together as a centerpiece and put plants on the left and right of it. Also do a search for planted tanks and look at the pictures to give you some ideas. :D

yeah I would like a variety of plants for it but I can't seem to find any that I love. All the ones I like are high lighting :? I need something but I am not sure what any ideas?. I have the amazon swords and the Java ferns for the back and for the taller stuff but I need something else thats mid level height. Maybe rocks would work. I just tied some Java moss to the wood, hoping it grows out. I have dwarf hair grass which isnt running and I have a micro sword, which I am going to cut this weekend and cross my fingers that it runs.

I know the tank looks cluttered still. lol I kinda want it to be a jungle in there but a controlled jungle need some lower height plants like i said. :)

I have a dream puffer tank in mind. :) I want a 180g planted dwarf puffer tank with rocks, wood, plants the works. but thats not going to happen any time soon.

All of my LFS have a great selection of rocks. Once you start looking around, I'm sure you'll find something that will fit nicely into your tank.

Yeah, I agree, more plants. I think you have a nice selection of plants, maybe you should just go for more of them, you don't have to look for anything different. Unless you want to of course :D . Taller plants are always great cause they block out the lines of sight really well, and can create the jungley look you're after. I always thought this tank looked really nice for that effect:

As for locating the rock, just don't place it slap bang in the middle of the tank. ;)

Hey Neurotic

I've just bought 125 plants off of Ebay.co.uk and filled my 55UKgallon Tank (see tank below)
planted-tank-full-final-high-1400.jpg
planted-tank-left-final-just-high.jpg
planted-tank-right-final-just-high.jpg
tank-side-high2.jpg
(Sorry should've wiped front of tank also cameraphone pix are crap)

I've had a look on Ebay.com (USA) and have found a few links for you, I'm not sure how much of a bargain these offers are as I don't know how much plants are in your lfs

The first one is a package of plants which should fill a 20gallon tank, it costs $26 INC P&P. Maybe you could get 2? check out their shop as they do 5 different packages (see link below)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2759.l1259

The 2nd one is for 20 plastic plants and is $54 INC P&P, Seems a bit expensive to me but maybe it's not in the USA (see link below)
http://cgi.ebay.com/20-assorted-plastic ... |294%3A200

In this third one they've got 3 different deals as follows:-
12 plants $33 inc p&p
30 PLANTS $57 inc p&p
50 plants $89 inc p&p
(see link below)
http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Assorted-Aquariu ... m153.l1262

Personally I think the more plants the better, when I first squeesed 125 plants in my tank they looked a bit to packed in/overcrowded but after a day the plants hjad relaxed and the fishes had been swimming all round and through them

Trust me it's more fun watching your puffer curiously exploring a well planted tank than just watching them in the open and even though your DP's are so small and you may not be able to see them all of the time, the ones you can see will be enough to watch and enjoy :)

Hope this has helped you out

Puffertt77 :)
