New to puffers - have 55 gallon tank, ideas for setup.

Hi there everyone, I have a 55 gallon tank which I used to have oscars and other large fish in awhile ago and have decided to set it up again and though have a fully dediced puffer setup would be a nice addition. I have been doing a bit of research of the different types of puffers available and the sizes they grow and so fourth. I would prefer to not get dwarf puffers, they are just a bit to small for me, I would like something that grows a bit larger and can be more of the center piece or pieces in this case since I'm looking for a species which I can have them in shoals. I was just looking for some more indepth information as to what types of puffers I could keep in groups in the tank as opposed to singular puffer, what sizes they grow to, tank setup for said puffers, etc. Also any ideas of the best setup for the tank, not just best for the fish but ones that look good, ease of maintenance etc. Any and all insight is welcome. Thank you.

as far as puffers in shoals the only ones i know of that do that are the SAPs (South American Puffers). i read they do best in groups of 6 or more. they stay fairly small (3 inches) and are active swimmers. i think a 55 would be goo for maybe 4 of them. as far as tank set up the more complex the better. lots of caves, plants, wood, rocks, the more the better. the only thing to keep in mind if you get the SAPs is that they need dental work about every 6 months, which involves knocking them out and clipping their teeth. there are a ton of great articles in the library that explain how to do this, take care of puffers, and tank set ups. glad to see you're doing your research first.

There's really only one puffer that is shoaling and does well in groups, the South American Puffer. There's a great article on them in the puffer library (under the learn tab)
