How much should I feed my puffers?

Post by izatop »

I have 2 amazon puffers in my 30 gallon. they are still small, about an inch or a bit more. i feed them frozen bloodworm. every time they eat (every day) their bellies end up being swollen, which is very cute, but bothersome. is this normal?
if it will help, i could find out exactly how much i feed them, as the food comes in prepackaged cubes, and i feed them a quarter cube at a time.

Well, actually, that's okay. Their tummies should get cute and round when you feed them. The ideal amount of food is enough to round their bellies, and no more.

But they need more crunchy food - here's a chunk I copy-pasted from the PufferPedia: "Live and frozen foods (not fish), snails, freeze-dried krill, frozen shrimp, black & bloodworms- live or frozen, ghost shrimp (gut-loaded), and other molluscs and crustaceans. These puffers must be fed a daily diet of snails to prevent beak overgrowth." Amazon puffers, AKA South American Puffers or SAPs (that's how most people refer to them on the forum), have beaks that grow crazy fast. You'll probably have to do some trimming, but to minimize that, they really must have the snails. If they don't get the snails, here's what happens: library/hospital/dentistry/.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
