Do Dwarf Puffer eats other fishes

Post by blackangel »

Hi

I got a 4x2x2 Tank with ottos, tetra, SAE, GAE, Red Nose & 2 Dwarf Puffers and plants.

Recently got a serious algae bloom and managed to get it under control through 3 days of consecutive WC (20%) and UV filter.

But these few days found some carcass of tetra & red nose that are partly eaten?

Are these the works of my 2 dwarf puffers?

My experience tells me that they are fin nippers, but I don't think they are outright killers. The other fish might have died of other causes, but maybe the stress of constantly being nipped at could have done them in too. Maybe someone else with more experience can tell you more. It is a possibility, but I personally think unlikely just with my experience with them..

The DP is still the most suspicious of the "crime" though .. *haha*
cos the other fishes should be peace loving kind :D

Anyway here is a pic of 1 of my DP (Just to confirm they are DP)

That is certainly a DP, and a cute one at that.....look at that face? Does that look like a face of a killer?

One of my local LFS's has a planted aquarium for display with a couple of DP's inside, along with a bunch of tetras, cherry shrimp and amano shrimp. The guy does not seem to have any problems with his DP in there, but it IS heavily planted....he is an avid fan and supporter of Amano designs.

Anyhoo, I seriously do doubt that the DP might be the cause, you should probably check out water parameters, see if anything funky is going on there, but keep an eye on them....I could be wrong. I have had tetras in with my DP in the past, and of the 5 original, 2 still remain....and I have a molly in there too, which seems to be doing just fine.

With that mix of fish I would guess that the SAE or the GAE had something to do with it. SAE's can be a great addition to an aquarium but they concentrate on eating hair-like algae and kind of picking on the little outbreaks of algae on decor and plants. If they don't have adequate amounts of either they will turn on other fish. I had an SAE take out a breeding pair of Pineapple Swordtails (both full size and depinately not passive fish) in a weeks time. He then proceeded to kill a very old and territorial Cherry Barb and a Cori Cat. The SAE had to go, so I moved him to his own tank and got some black beard algae from a friend and started it in a 10 gallon tank with live plants.

Hehe, trust me, I normally throw the blame at a puffer first....it just seemed unlikely in this case....and like i said, I could be wrong, but I doubt it. But then again, I was wrong once.....in 1981...and its been downhill since...
