Finally Got My 2 Suvatti's!!

Post by pufferpuggirl »

Hey,

I finally got my Birthday present one day early -- 2 juvenile Suvatti's!!!

They are soooo cute. They've settled in nicely and immediately tried to bury themselves in the sand. I am getting PVC tubes
tomorrow, for them to lay in. I know they enjoy hiding. I've got some plants coming soon, so I will plant up the tank heavily to
give them extra privacy and hiding areas.

I have been wanting these little guys for about the last 2 months, or since I first seen them at my LFS. I had intended to only get
one because they do have quite a reputation, but I got two because these are siblings and they've never been apart. Hopefully
there won't be any problems, but I do have 2 extra tanks that I'm not doing anything with, so if needs be, I can always move one
into one of those. I hope I don't have to do that though.

I'd love to hear from anyone who owns this type of Puffer, so I can find out what they are like. I mean, I've read info on here, and I
just recently got the Aqualog book on Fresh and Brackish Water Puffers (excellent book!).

Great Birthday Present!!

Thank you so much, they are eyeing up my Tetras that I could not get out of the tank. Could be Tetras for a late night snack for the young Suvatti's. :(

Wow that's got to be one of the best birthday presents a puffer lover could get - a couple of compatible suvattis! I hope they thrive with you.

Yep - I got up this morning and looked into the tank to see them both swimming happily, although one of the Tetras has disappeared! I thought they just laid around all the time, didn't expect to see them up and swimming, of course, the lights are still out, so maybe that's why they are up. I guess once I turn on the daylights they will lay back down again.
I wish I knew whether they are male and female. Does anyone know how to sex these guys? None of the literature I have discusses this.

Yeah, don't expect there to be any tankmates in there for long... I'd also get a tank divider ready, although you may just wake up with 1 or no puffers after they mature. No way to tell if those are 2 males & even a pair might fight to the death. Happy Bday though!

Sorry, I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I will work on it this weekend and try to put them on here.

I went out today and bought them both a piece of PVC pipe so they have some shelter. One of them immediately moved into the little tunnel, but the other is just laying by the tube. There is still one Tetra swimming around, but I suspect when the lights go out tonight, that Tetra will be a snack for one of the little Suvattii's.

Does anyone know for certain that they will fight, or is it something that's just been said? The reason I am asking is that I recently bought a book on Puffers, it's from a reputable source too (Aqualog-The Puffers of Fresh and Brackish Water, it's out of Germany), and it says that you can keep more than one Suvattii in the same tank, but that they will view other fish as a meal.

Well anyway, I can only hope that there isn't any problems with mine. :?
