Water flow causes puffer to puff?

Post by RichGSR »

My arrowhead swam into my canister filter's outflow and he puffed. It was pretty funny. Anyone else ever see something like this? He's back to normal now, but I was wondering if I should use a spraybar instead. Is the occasional puff bad for them? Any thoughts?

I don't think the occasional puff is bad for them unless of course they are being severely stressed out by something. He may have just been taken by surprise and wasn't expecting to be taken away by the flow or something. He may also just have been practicing although I don't think that is something common in this species. But yeah, as long as the puffer is not being provoked or purposely scared into it by person or other fish, I don't think it should matter too much. Just make sure he is not always doing it I guess.

Yeah, I agree with making sure he's not doing it all the time. If it's just a one-off, though, I wouldn't worry about it. My Abe once puffed at my heater because it was making ticking noises... He was happy when I finally replaced it. ;)
