Water requirements?!

I realize they need highend brackish/full marine when full grown, but what about when their still a baby?

I just picked two up (12 CDN DOLLARS! both!) the pet shop named them GSPs (I knew better).

Their probably just under an inch right now... i have them in a 38 Gallon planted tank with a killi fish lol.

Should I let them stay in freshwater for a few months before beginning my conversion?

From my understanding of their lifecyle, they most likely spawn in freshwater? Then move downstream as they grow.

I was thinking 1-2 months in fresh,

then move them slowly to 1.005 by 6 months? (2 inches?)
then by 1 year have them up to 1.015 and so on?

I guess i'm more worried about the first few months.. i'll have pics later.. their adorable!
They don't even nip at each other (one follows the other one).

A few months in freshwater will begin stressing their immune systems. Move them to 1.002 as soon as it's practical to get the plants out of there, then up to 1.006 over a month. After that, it's safe to go slower, but holding off on brackish water, unless there is an emergency(like needing to do water changes because of an uncycled tank) that will immediately kill them, brackish water should be the first priority.

^ oh really? I'll do that this weekend then... No other priorities, this was a fully cycled planted with light brackish plants (java fern, Aponogento Crispus, Crypt Becketti,a few onion plants... ) Have some sort of hygro that i might leave for a few weeks to see how it survives the salinity.

No need to go as high as 1.015 within a year. Get them up to 1.005 by 6 months & then maybe 1.008 by the end of the year. Congrats on your new babies--we've gotta see pics of those cuties, before they grow up!

Check out the GSP article in the libarary - it gives some good baseline SG's for these puffers based on size. Getting to some level of brackish is more important than a specific number on the low end of the spectrum.

Yeah, my Ceylons are in 1.010 and they're about 1.5 - 2 inches in length. I'm hoping to have a marine tank set up by the end of August for the little guys. I've got the tank, and just finished painting the stand, so now I just need to dump the $1000+ into the equipment, substrate, and rock.

you could always do it bit by bit... I should be hitting 1.019 tomorrow (just had to spend £40 on salt at the weekend as I had run out) an plan on getting the LR in stages, a couple of pieces here and there until I have what I need, then wait a few weeks unlit I have the cash for the skimmer etc. it helps with cash flow and lack of patience LOL but then the tank that is going marine is the tank he's in at the moment... keep us updated with how it's going

I'm hoping to pick up some aragonite sand this weekend, as well as the heater and a Koralia 4 powerhead. Once things get settled, I'm going to hunt around for a smaller piece of live rock. A couple guys around here make VERY good quality DIY rock, and it's both cheaper and lighter than normal rock (since they make them into marvelous shapes), so I'm going to pick up a bunch of that as my base rock, and then add real pieces on top.

Don't worry, I plan on keeping people posted. I've just been pretty busy with work lately, so I don't always get time to visit TPF.
