I finally got a look at the left gill and while still flared a little the red has definitely got better. I decided to go ahead and dose the tank with Mela. again. Darned if he didn't go nuts! I KNOW this is not his feeding behavior.
He's whipping his tail back and forth and jerking it hard just like he did the first time. I turned the lights off and left the room for a few seconds. As soon as I went back in there and he saw me he started the behavior again. I put the carbon back in the tank. I think this is it for Harry and Melafix. I'm leery of ever giving it to him again. I think I'd rather use an antibiotic IF it comes to that. Maybe he's that 1 in 200. I know I haven't had him long, almost a month, but he has never acted like this before. Only with Melafix.

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Perhaps in an inflammation, rather than a wound, it's just creating an uncomfortable burning sensation.

If you wish to try Melafix again, perhaps you should administer it in divided doses over several hours rather than adding the entire amount all at once. This may help prevent the reaction you are seeing.

That's what I'm concerned about, that it was burning. I've left the carbon in and I stopped treating him for anything. It's for sure I don't see any decline. He's still a pig and busy fluttering around. He bit my little boy again yesterday while being fed and that time it hurt. We laughed about it. 
Of course my little boy dropped the food and Harry got so fat that he won't be eating today. Looked like he was going to explode.

Boy isn't that true. This is all my oldest son's fault. He talked me into getting a puffer.
I got some pvc. I'm going to wait until I change the substrate before I fix it like a cave. And can you believe I've been to 3 dollar stores and all they have are silk plants? That's an awesome idea, thank you for sharing.
Guess I'll meet ya'll back on the brackish forum for now. I hope for good.

It just may not be something he can tolerate; our fish that had the greatest problem was an 8" red & white show Oranda, and the cw is that a goldfish should be able to tolerate anything (although this isn't really true, and I've found that puffers aren't any harder to keep than fancy show goldfish; I believe it was PufferPunk that once said that serious goldfish keepers do a 90% wc a week).LizB wrote:I tried doing it every half hr. but if I have to do it again I'll try it like you said.

I'm glad someone got the Borg thing. It was originally my account, but the dh wanted to log in to read and post, so it made the most sense to share an account as we only have 1 pc atm.
