Do not use QuICK Cure!

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Do not use QuICK Cure!

Post by chevrolet67impala »

Quick cure claims to heal your fish in 2 days...It doesn't. It also contains very harmful chemicals (formalin) which I've been told is short for formaldehyde, which not only is embalming fluid, but it gives people cancer risks (if not cancer) and will burn the skin of your poor fishy. Nowhere on the quick cure bottle, nor package does it say not to use on scaleless fish (which are very sensitive and temperamental to chemicals as is), it says it's safe for tropical fish in fresh or salt water conditions... but really it's not safe at all. Due to my lack of knowing most of this, my poor sweet puffer died. In a tank filled with chemically stinging water. I feel inconsolably sad, and responsible. I'm posting this in attempts to stop any more puffers from dying of the same terrible fate as my beloved puffy did, to try to get the smallest bit of good out of my heartbreaking situation, please don't make the same horrible mistake I did...DON'T USE QUICK CURE!

If you would like to help me get the quick cure company to list on their bottles/packages not to use there product on scaleless fish please try to find their official website to complain( I have not yet found their website, if their is one, if you can find it please post.) or post negative reviews on pet supply stores which carry or even recommend this misleading product. Thank you very much, I hope this helps the puffer/puffer owner community...

Meds are not needed to cure ich. Sorry for your loss.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Sorry to hear about this, can we add Parasite Guard (made by jungle) to our list of do not use ?
It also seems to have burnt my poor puffys skin :(

Parasite Guard has an active ingredient called Trichlorofon.
I looked up Trichlorofon and it said it's toxic to fish. here's one source
http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/in ... orfon.html

I think i might call the company.... maybe they'll know how to reverse the effects?

I understand that salt is one of the best medications for ich and many other parasites. Is there another way to treat ich or are you saying that salt is not a medication?

With minor cases of ich an increase in temperature and water changes is enough to get rid of it. I don't think salt would really be considered a medication, since all it really does is help kill ich and not much else.

Thats like saying aspirin shouldn't be called a medication because all it does is cure headache.Salt (sodium chloride NaCl)not only kills ich.It kills Tricodina,Costia,Chilodinella,Epistylis,Scyphidia,Glossatella,Tetrahymena, and some flukes.Salt also can inhibit the uptake of nitrates by fish............................Also it taste great on fried eggs

That's true but salt is also natural, so I guess it is a medication, but not in the sense where it may have harmful effects and need to be used with caution as with Quick Cure.

This is how salt works:

" [...] Acts as a skin irritant increasing mucus production, throwing off skin parasites.
The high sodium ion concentration is toxic to external parasites.
The osmotic change will call parasites to implode. [...]" - http://www.pond-doctor.co.uk/longkoimedications.html

I think we can say it's a medication(for FW fish, it's just part of the mineral cocktail for SW and BW fish) but that it's not a synthetic chemical medication...
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

We don't use Quick Cure on puffers, but have used formalin dips without problems. The chemical harmful to puffers in Quick Cure is the Malchite Green, a chemical many scaleless fish can't tolerate. (Manual of Fish Health, Andrews, Excell, Carrington, Firefly Books, 2003).

Formalin should not be used if it has been exposed to cool temperatures resulting in the formation of extremly toxic white paraformaldehyde crystals. All the formalin-only products we've purchased as fish medications have been crystallized, and therefore unsuitable for use. We purchased pharmaceutical grade 37% formalin from Walgreens and use it when necessary to treat ich, velvet, and sliminess of the skin (costia, trichodina, chilodinella, or marine brooklynella). Formalin dips are sometimes necessary with Costia and Flukes as strains have been found that are resistant to the salt treatments that worked in the past. (See Costia by Florida Vet. Dr. Johnson at http://www.koivet.com/html/articles/art ... e=Diseases).

How and when to use formalin dips is described by Dr. Johnson at http://www.koiulcerdisease.com/index.php?id=70. We've used the dip concentrations and durations for puffers as described for Koi by Dr. Johnson in this article. The 2 hour dips at 25-50 ppm described by Dr. Johnson are nowhere near as hard on the fish as the 25 ppm long term baths advocated in the 1990s.

Of course, if didn't know not to treat a puffer with QuICK cure, then yes, it will hurt them. And yes, I have done this in the past stupidly, and, again, yes, I am an idiot. It is my fault that my Modestus is dead, AND I also put all my fish in an uncycled tank. Yay for me.

Anyway, QuICK cure works for all of my scaled fish perfectly, I don't know why you're having problems...
