Human medicine - safe to use?

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Human medicine - safe to use?
Hi there!
I just have a few question about this subject:
Where I live is hard to get medicines like PraziPro, Ultra Cure Gel-tek and so to treat internal parasites, if I need a good one I should import some but it would be too expensive to afford. So I always google the medicines you mention here to check what they are made of.
Levamisole HCl is one of the cheapest pills (costs cents) to buy (for human usage) and its directions says to take a unique dose and the worms will be out of the body within 24-48h. Is this applicable to fish? The same to praziquantel?
One more thing, I found a good medicine to deworm dogs that contains praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Its directions says it takes one dosage to eliminate worms within 24-48h.
I'm asking this questions, because I am deworming my F8 and I was able to inject the medicine inside a snail shell (taking a tiny piece from the pill). So should I follow the human/dog medicine directions? Unique dose? I don't know the best course of action, could you please help me?
Thanks and sorry for the long text.

Re: Human medicine - safe to use?
Dog medicine often contains fillers that I would not put in my fish tank to make it palatable to dogs. But the human grade might work as a food soak, IF it's low filler.

Re: Human medicine - safe to use?
Is your puffer DESPERATELY sick with IPs (to the point that his plump belly disappears in 2-5 hours)? If he's not dangerously sick with IPs, I highly suggest you use the pumpkin seed method. I imagine you could find pumpkin seeds near you (we have them in clear plastic containers near the peanuts, almonds, etc.), maybe in a local grocery store? Like many others, I'm avidly against using medication unless it's absolutely critical. The pumpkin seed method works quite well (assuming you don't accidentally burn the mixture while cooking >_<), and it's very inexpensive ($3 for the seeds).
I don't know much about meds, so I'd listen to Nick and any others with more experience on medicinal substitutes.

That's why my fish is in a QT, I change daily 100% of water. Fillers can be harmful to the fish? I already knew about the pumpkin seed method but it doesn't sound to do great deal. Have you ever tried it before? I'll go search for it in the forum... how about the directions of that meds I mentioned? Should I skip this kind of treatment?

Re: Human medicine - safe to use?
I've heard Pumpkin seed works quite well actually. I would stick with the natural route and if you must use meds, then stick with what's already proven good/safe. no need to risk your puffer just for a couple bucks.

Well I wish Nick or Agnate would have replied to my IP threads earlier.
It would have been useful to me before, now its too late.
Dont use meds, I highly recomend the Pumpkin seed method. I havent tried it but the other ways are to dangerous.

Re: Human medicine - safe to use?
Thanks friends... I'm gonna find the pumpkin seeds, it must not be hard to find it around hear.
Jase - As I mentioned above, we don't have treatment for internal parasites for fish. Everybody here use to use metronidazol. To get a good medicine, I would import some and I can't afford it.
Once again, I would like to thank you all for helped me!

Re: Human medicine - safe to use?
Make sure the seeds are NOT roasted. The active components degrade quickly with heat. I've never tried that myself, and I've heard that if it doens't work the first time, get seeds from a different source, because as with any natural product you must refine yourself, the base potency varies quite a bit.

I wish I saw and had a chance to reply to all sick fish threads, but somestimes I don't get a chance. I was using "show new posts" for a while, rather than browsing for new posts, and it misses some apparently.

I use "show new posts" too, this is the way I learn a little more about these wonderful fish. I wish I was more expert to help everybody too...

Yeah, I apologize GSP. I don't always get a chance to see all the posts, and a lot of times if I see someone like Yunachin or Pufferpunk post in a topic, I assume they've already handled it.
Again, sorry!
