Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I have called all over the place including my vet and no one seems to have what I need to cure Nemo's internal parasites. The only thing I've found so far is in the above subject line. It has praziquantel, metronidazole & acriflavine. Acriflavine being for external fungus in tropical fish. I think I've seen the other ingredients here.
It says it's for tropical fish. Why couldn't I use this for Nemo?

To my surprise they're still both alive and eating well. Nemo doesn't look any worse. He looks as though someone pinched his stomach and it just didn't puff back out like it should. Pete's fungus left in 24hrs. I think Nemo's is gone. I haven't looked him over real well today but it's for sure it's not worse or I would've noticed it. I go in there every morn holding my breath looking so see if anyone has died. I swear there's a light colored rock in there that I've got to move. Everytime I see it I think it's a dead fish. :)

Let me know what you all think about the Parasite Clear.

It will probably do the job. Just make sure you soak the food in it for at least 30 minutes. I tried making the pumpkin seed recipe yesterday, but I ended up leaving it on low heat for too long (got caught up with my friends that came down for the weekend) and ended up burning it. :?

Looks like I'll have to go buy more seeds and try again!

The parasite clear is a fizzing pill that you drop in the tank. It says it's for fresh water fish and it clears external and internal parasites. Some people have told me that since my puffers are low brackish that this med is ok. What do ya'll think?

I actually found another fish store rather close and I called to see how late they're open and whether or not they have what I need. The guy was so hateful, refused to tell me what he had and then told me it's illegal to talk about meds on the phone! He hung up on me!! What is it with these people? I'm not trying to get male vs. female going, but is aquariums and fish a man's world and I'm therefore stepping on toes? I swear I don't get it.

Paul, I'm so forgetful that I take a timer with me when something important is going on. :lol: maybe you should try that the next time you're cooking the seeds. :D Let me know how they turn out.

Seems Pete and Nemo are laying down a lot today. Of course that worries me. Oh, and I got a bunch of snails from Petsmart. The girl just went through the tanks with a net and pulled LOT'S of snails out and gave them to me. They're in a different tank. I expect to be ran over with snails any day now. :lol: And I did stay away from the ice cream coned shaped ones.

I don't know what I'd do without you guys.

this is the stuff I use, cause apparently nobody carries IP meds around here (pretty lame) but it seems to do the trick. I don't follow the directions though (too wasteful IMO) I put half a tablet in a glass of tank water and then soak the food 30 minutes. hope you see results. :)

Oh Jase I love you! Finally, a remedy! I'm so afraid it's going to be too late for Nemo. He's breathing hard tonight and his gills look weird. They look kinda sunk in and red. That's the only way I know how to describe it. I just know that I'm going to wake up to a dead fish in the morning. :( It just makes me sick. I swear he has fought so hard. He ate good today but I noticed he just didn't seem right. Now the gills and hard breathing. Pete looks fine. He has started looking at me and not simming off. Neither one of them seemed friendly at all when I got them. They really did come from an awful place. There was disease and death all in that tank. The last time I went there only a few feeders and one dead puffer was left.

If Nemo dies Pete will be a lone fish. No way will I take a chance with him and I know they don't need buddies.
It's hard for me not to humanize them when it comes to that.

For now the biggest thing I've learned is don't count on getting the right meds when you get a fish. I anticipated problems but I had no idea it would be this hard to find what they need to be well.
