Can any tobies be kept together
Can any tobies be kept together
Was just wondering, can you keep any of the tobies together. I love so many of them and would like to one day have some. If I can't combine them, then that is going to be a lot of tanks for the future, but can't complain. Also if I was to put some in the same tank, which would be the best combinations and what size tank?
Also, I guess it is mainly down to the individual puffer as well!

Re: Can any tobies be kept together
I successfully kept a Valentini puffer with a Papuan puffer in a 135 gallon tank. They never really showed any emotions towards each other. My valentini was extremely placid though, not aggressive at all. The papuan is also very very gentle. Ive seen some absolute terror tobies so youre completely right, it depends on the individual puffer.
Usually it is not recommended. Id say start off with one toby and see what sort of personality it has towards other tankmates. I wouldnt consider it in less than a 75 gallon.

Re: Can any tobies be kept together
SW puffers are generally much more accepting of tank mates than FW and BW puffers.

I don't have 2 tobies together but I do have a Hawaiian White Spot and a GSP together. They don't even notice one another.

Haha, I knew I was forgetting something!
Yeah, I don't even know what kind of a tank I want it to be yet.
I'd like a SW setup, but I believe they can get preeeetty damn expensive, no?

Re: Can any tobies be kept together
Your biggest expenses will be the live rock & skimmer. After that, it's not too bad. Go to http://www.reefcentral.com & look for a local reef club there. Start posting & get advice from the locals. Many of them are tearing down or downsizing & you can sometimes get rock as cheap as $1-3/lb. The LFS sell it for as much as $6-9/lb! You can probably get a goood, used skimmer too. Consider an overflow & a sump for your tank (although not necessary--you'll just be doing a lot more WC).
