GSP Poop Question!

I know I could have phrased the subject differently but I couldn't resist using the word poop, lol. And no, I'm not 10 years old!

I have a question concerning IPS and my GSP. I've had him for around two months now and he's very healthy and eats lots and has great coloring. I saw him poo probably a month ago and it looked normal. The other night however my boyfriend saw him poo and he said that it was white and stringy. I believe I've read on here that that is a sign of IPS. Last night I saw Milton poo again and it was normal brown poo. Wouldn't he always have stringy poo if he had IPS or is the white strings just dead worms so its not something that happens all the time...

I've always thought his stomach looks normal, rounded after I feed him then the next day not round but not really too skinny either but now I'm paranoid.

I guess I should have treated him for IPS when I first got him but the LFS says they put medicines in the tanks when fish arrive and Milton always seemed healthy.

I looked at the article on here about treating for IPS but I'm confused about the treatments. Are all of the medicines available just for dogs and cattle or is there anything for fish I could get? I looked up one of the medicines on petco.com and it came up as a puppy dewormer but it was kind of pricey... I'd rather keep on saving for a bigger tank for Milton than have to spend a ton of money on dewormer.

There is a dewormer we use for our sheep... would that work? Its some weird paste that we squeeze into their mouth...

Any suggestions?

I don't think sheep de-wormer would work. It might be too much for the little fellow. There is some medicine called Ultra Cure PX by Gel Tek. It is about 4 dollars, so not too expensive. That works for all sorts of parasites. You might be able to find it at your LFS. Or google it and you can find it online.

well thats the issue, I read the library article and I'm confused about the treatments because when I searched for the stuff it came up as a dog dewormer...

I'm still not even sure if he has ips. Wouldn't he be showing signs of sickness if he has had it for over two months?

I have heard if they have parasites they get sunken in stomachs. If he has been greeting you and nothing seems out of the ordinary then he may be just fine.

I wouldnt worry for now, when I was dealing with IP's it was a bit of string white poo or absolutely nothing whatsoever. If you're seeing brown poo and he's maintaining weight and not getting a sunken belly very quickly after feeding you should be OK. My Oscar does the same thing sometimes generally if i've not fed him on a fasting day, might get a white stringy poo and then back to his normal dump after a feeding.

My Bluespot toby has stringy poo but as long as he is eating good, has a nice round stomach all the time & acts perfectly normal, I'm not worrying.

yeah it could also be related to the food he has eaten prior to the pooping, I know that when I eat too much bread......... I'll leave it there I think
