i saw this picture and it looks exactly like the puffer i bought as a fangi puffer...although when i saw it thouht its colouration made it look more like a turgidus....
he spends most of his time ina cave in my tank lurking and moving his big red eyes around waiting to be fed....really beautiful fish full of lots of pretty dark markings on his belly wish is a off white colour

10 gallon with serpaes,glowlight and one old bleeding heart tetra, common pleco 2 weather loaches one regular and one golden as well as 3 zebra danios. ( overstocked for shure...but nothing ever dies in this tank and is extremly healthy ).

I think it is possible that turgidus and cochinchinensis may represent variations of the same species. So far as PP says they are only distinguished by their ocellus.
Fang's puffers (M. cochinchinensis) are supposed to have a large, target like red spot as juveniles that turns black on old puffers, but remains large. M. turgidus are supposed to have a spot not much larger than the other spots on the body, on adults it should have the same size as the other spots. The color can be variable. However, it seems there are puffers right in between and further studies are needed to show they are different species or not.

really sounds like a turgidus because thats what his spots are like not much bigger than his other markings and its a lightish brown colour on that target area...not red ....but hes small like a fangs puffer and not looking like hes getting any longer but then again i dont know how fast they grow beacuse ive had him a little more than a month now....
and to hilly i dont have any pics as of now on a digital camera so ill wait for my g/f to come over and take some pics for me.

also i know its not a abei for shure....mines got a short snout
