I would leave the tank fallow (fishless) for 6 - 8 weeks.

I already tore the tank down. It'll give me a chance to put my 150 in its place and do everything correctly, taking my time.

Absolutely not true. Same failures/successes can happen in SW, as FW or BW. QT is probably the most important step you can do in any tank, to prevent failures. The only loss I've had in the 3 years I've been doing SW, is jumping fish. Got a canopy now.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I have lost 2 porcupine puffers in the past looks to be about the same size if not smaller than your little guy. One had ick from the petstore I thought I could heal up and rescue, and the other cloudy eyes in a QT tank that had ideal water conditions. After about 3 days he got pale didn't eat cloudy eyes breathing hard and died You did all you could, I know the feeling of trying to do all you can and still have a bad outcome. I think alot of it has to do with the lfs that you get the little guys from, The latest porc puff that I have in Qt tank I purchased from a different store. Don't let this stop you from enjoying this hobby. I hope you will stay with it and give it a try with anothe porc. They are my favorite out of the 2 dog face puffers I have. Hang in there!!
