Keeps getting very leaky replaced all o ring including priming pump one any ideas

I am a terrible filter snob. I use Eheim for external canisters, period. I have many of them, and multi-filert almost all of my tanks. When the Fuuvals are faint memories, the Eheims will still be running just fine.

Merging returns or intakes is not really the best technique. keeping them independently operated allows you to customize the current to suite the fish's needs.

Although I have and use a lot of Eheims, I also operate a lot of sumps. They are nothing to really worry about, and are very useful to house equipment such as heaters which are unattractive and at some risk in the display tanks. You can also set for easy-access mechanical filtration with sumps, which can be maintained easily and more frequently than external canisters. That will give you higher water quality in the long run - which is a big benefit to the fish.

My fluval ran without problems for 10 years (SW now, so no filter!) & its still running 3 years later on a friends tank! I have no experience with any other make though.

sump sounds tempting too will look in to this. seems i may have bought a duff eheim as its only 4 years old and constantly leaks even tho all orings have been replaced, previously stuck with eheim but looking into all ideas with an open mind as we all like different things. does any one know a good site for diy filters? thanks all

Cant say I read the whole thread but i dont suggest marineland. I have a canister of theirs that is less then a year old and it has crapped out on me. So now I get to take it apart and see if I can figure out what is wrong

i tried the marineland HOB for 60-80 gallons (cant remember exactly) and it didnt work right off the bat, returned it and bought a cascade 700. works like a charm.

LOL, I have a Marineland magnum 350 canister that I cant figure out how to get it to run right anymore. I been puzzled for years on this filter.

Now I cant down any other filter because I have never owned any of the ehiem, Fluvals, or the new Marineland c-series. Just hear alot of the good/bad stuff. But I think everyone has his/her own like about a certain brand and set-up. Now I do love the AC HOB filters though and the Marineland HOB filter are not too bad either except I hate the filter cartridges but those two HOB filters lasted years and still have them all.

I have Eheims still running constantly which have been going for 40 or more years. I do tend to replace the hoses every 10-15 years and have broken a few impellers from dropping them, but I consider the units themselves essentially eternal. No other company has every approached their reliability, or for that matter, even come close.

+1,000,000,000!!! I just sold my very 1st Eheim, purchased 30 years ago. Still worth something!

has anyone experienced a leak from the top of eheims? it comes from where the power cable goes.. even replaced priming pump oring serious leak from it now very annoying

also does anyone use uv filters are they worth it?

I would use a uv filter if i had the money and space for it. helps with algae problems

I believe it was RTR(forgive me if Im wrong) that said they arent that good cause they not only kill bad bacteria but also good ones

Although on small tanks sump/wetdry are the not most feasible option. Once you start using them you find how great they are. A must for SW,imo.
