RTR of course you are correct... I never thought about the capture process and how other fish in that catch were treated and how they did.


Corvus I have read the article and in my research found PP's quote from 6 yeas ago. Yes again it could be the timing of the catch shipment transport and the fact like salmon they may have expended them selves in the entire ordeal.

It is good to hear that at least one member has had some long term success with this fish

Mandykat: can you give us a little back ground as to how you kept it? Feeding tank size and temps if you can recall them??

I was really tempted to get one recently .... they are lovely fish, although I could see that they were extremely aggressive towards one another. If someone had had some good experience with one, I might have tried it, except that the price is a bit high for something that probably won't make it.

I'd love to hear more of Mandykat's experiences too. Definitely a lovely puffer. Have we determined whether this puffer is suited more for brackish or marine conditions though?

As far as I have read it is very low end brackish temperate waters. But given that, it also sounds like it might be able to handle some slight SG swings. Warmer temps would equal less salt and lower temps could do with more. That is just what I am interpreting from reading and by no means any kind of rule or guide.

Polish... My ocellatus was in a twenty long with an Eheim, 76 degrees, city water, which is pretty good in Milwaukee for fishies... ph. 7.5ish, not hard water at all, minimal carbonates... pretty stinking soft water, actually. (which totally makes you guys wonder, eh? I feed him fiddler crabs, crayfish, guppies, krill, silversides, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, he even ate spirulina pellets....

I gave him 30% water changes every week.... he was maybe 4 inches when I got him, and he only grew another inch or so the whole time I had him... He eventually got moved into a 30 breeder tank after the second year or so...

Do you know if he's still alive or how long he lived? That makes me hopeful about my guy.

I was aware that they bred in FW, but I did not realize how salmon-like they are - the stress of spawning followed by transport and multiple moves to a home tank would be impossible for many fish to survive. Thanks for the info!
