Fahaka doesn't like shell on shrimp

I got 1LB of shell on shrimp yesterday from the grocery store and my Fahaka doesn't like it. I usually feed him krill everyday, but he's getting too big so krill isn't economical. I have offered shrimp to him everyday for the past 3 days. He bites it, shakes his head trying to rip it apart and then just leaves it sitting on the floor of the tank... I know he's hungry and I want him to like the shrimp, so what should I do?

I belive the process is to bath it in garlic, wait for an expert to give you details though

He might just not like it. Try a few different foods.

Try cutting the shrimp into smaller pieces at first. Once he learns that it is good to eat, maybe he will then be willing to exert some effort toward tearing larger pieces apart.

If not, I suggest steaming the rest of the shrimp, buy or make some cocktail sauce, grab a beer and enjoy!

There are some foods that some of my puffers love & others won't touch, & visa-versa.

My 4.5" puffer (miurus) doesn't touch any dead food with hard shells. It only eats them without the shell.

But it is willing to attack a 2" crayfish and swallow everything.

So now, its staple is prawn meat, with a couple of live crayfish every week.

All of the above suggestions are good and the anecdotes on feeding particular individuals are apt. Part of dealing with such personable fish is just that - dealing with and working through their quirks.

But a single try at a new food with puffers is frequently a non-starter. Repitition, blending with other accepted foods, pre-treating with garlic or other appetite stimulants are all part of the process. And then keeping the diet as varied as you can gives you a margin when some particular food is out of stock and unavailable.
