New to Puffers

Hi

Have a spare tank, its 62x52x39cm(24x20x15inches) holds approx 113ltr(25 imp.gals or 30 US gal)

Tank is fully cycled, I was thinking of some GSP which they have in my LFS, could I have 2 of these guys in there?

If not I assume a pignose would be ok for it on its own, I know pignose is FW, no point in 2 posts

Otherwise what are my stocking options for any puffer in this size tank??

Hi there, welcome to the forum

You could fit one GSP in there but it may be a bit tight, two is a definate no no. It seems you have done your research as you have posted in the Brackish section so Kudos there GSP are ofeten sold as FW but very few people relise they do very well in near to marine conditions, this means having to transfer to a set up geared for this as the puffer matures.

A pignose or T. Suvatti would be ok in that tank but as with all puffer tanks you need to overfilter to cater for the great amount of watse that these fish produce when feeding and digesting.

If you wan action in the tank, I would suggest the low brackish Figure 8, you could have 2, or FW there are more options, 6-8 dwarf puffers in a planted tank, 2 South American puffers. Other lurkers would be suitable too, my personal favourite is the T miurus.

What filter will you be running? And please ensure the tank is fully cycled before you add the puffer/s

Hi thanks for the reply, I didn't think I could have a GSP so a bit gutted!

The tank has a built in trickle filter but also putting a eheim aqauball 2212 in as well, can fit a external on as it would mean ripping the top of the tank apart which is plastic, so thats a no go.

Shame my LFS doesn't stock anything but rhe GSP and Pugnose.

Where up near bakewell, notto far from derby, vist our LFS at chesterfield a lot then sometimes Wharf in pinxton, only when I know they have what i want.

Wharf had Turgidus in the other week, Blue Lagoon just down the road had Dwarfs and a couple of SAP's that used to be owned by a member on here. You could have a community of 5 or 6 Dwarfs in there.

When you say a GSP may be a bit tight. How tight? Would its mean upgrading the tanka few years down the line depending on how the GSP grows?? The GSP at our LFS are either 1.5" or 2.5" so they are still young.

Are there any links to GSP biotopes? I was hoping to set one up, maybe?

NEver kept a brackish tank so any info or link would be gratfully received.

GSP is pretty much ok in 30 gallons, two would be a nono, but 1 should be alright so long as you make water changes enough to keep nitrates down.

Cool, I was hoping 2 could go, but nevermind, one is fine for me, I have an real passion for my fish, so water changes get done not matter waht.

What is the ideal set up for them?

I have black sand, ocean rock and slate to use. Can GSP be kept with live plants or is it silk only?

yeah definately one and plenty of water changes and you should have a very healthy long lived puffer. You have to consider that brackish means no plants and even bogwood rots faster in a SW environment so the items you describe would be perfect, you could set a cave up and places to explore and use plastic plants to great effect

So silk plants are ok, as is rock, slate caves, Could i put in bogwood/mopani wood? as long as it was replaced when needed?

I'm not too sure on bogwood in saltwater, I know that it deteriorates and rots much faster but I don't know of any rules as to how fast it will rot, best wait and see what other SW bods say. You can buy some very good plastic logs now if the outcome isn't too favourable
