Geen puffer in fresh water tank.

Hello i am new on this site and i love it!!
Pleas forgive my bad spelling!! I am from sweden..

If have ben reding on sites about green puffer (Tetraodon fluviatilis). And some say thet they live in fresh water and some that the live in brackish water, others that they live in both.

any one that are keping them in fresh water?? Do they live as long in fresh thet they do in brackish?? Are there any other sidefects????

i love this fish and i wold like keep it in a 180 liter tank..

They need high end brackish to full marine for optimal health. They would not last very long in a full FW environment.

They do not live as long kept in freshwater as they do in brackish. These fish are born in freshwaters upriver and migrate as they age into the brackish waters where the river meets the ocean. What people have found keeping them in home aquaria is that while they are young its ok to start in a freshwater tank, but as they age its keeps them much healthier to slowly raise the salinity of their tank with their growth. As adults they thrive in full marine salinity. Their immune systems are stronger and the fish are more vigorous. They also live many years with this practice of adding salt, verses only one year or two in fresh. If the brackish and marine conditions are the only thing holding you back and making you hesitate about adding these wet pets to your collection my personal advice is not to fear. You have time to learn and you have come to an excellent place to start. The forum is full of knowledgeable puffer keepers who do not mind helping others and their advice is backed by much experience. The puffers you are thinking about are wonderful pets full of personality and their darling faces happy to see you at their tank glass make the extra work with salt more than worth it.

I am going to get a 180 liter(L) i dont know how many gallon that is. can i keep 3 South American Puffer (Colomesus asellus) in the same tank?

It´s a big diference betwen information here and information on swedish websites. but i shink that the information i get here is more right.

Colomesus Asellus are freshwater so they wont be compatible with a fluviatilis.
180 litres is 39UK/47 US gallons which will be fine for one Fluviatilis on its own.

So it is to smal even for 2 SAPs? the rekomendation is 15 Us gallon if i understand it right??? maby i dont

That is per puffer, so you could keep 3 SAPs or 1 fluviatilis (if that is what the species really is--many nigroviridis are mislabled as such).

Okey. no it is not going to be fluviatilis so the SAPs is the one i like to have.

The most comon puffer is fluviatilis but the information people get here is that they are Fresh water fish.
Auriglobus modestus is also a fish you will found often.
i never seen any SAPs in a shop but is is easy to order from a pettshop. =)

Did you go to pur Pufferpedia & look up fluviatilis? It really isn't a commonly found puffer. Maybe in Sweden it is though. Just to be sure you have the right name.

Yes i got the right puffer.
some say that there are other puffer that lock like green puffer but it lives in fresh water. but i belive it is the same.

See, this is what I mean. Please look it up in our Pufferpedia. My guess is you see the Green Spotted Puffew, T nigroviridis. There is no other puffer that looks like the fluviatilis that is FW.
