That's a Burrfish! I don't know which species, though. Burrfish are marine puffers with fixed raised spikes that don't fold back against the skin like a porcupine puffer's do. From what I've read here on the forum, they do not often adjust well to captivity and usually will not accept prepared foods, making the Burffish an extremely difficult fish to keep at best. Hopefully sassiegemstone, OraLacerta, or another Burrfish keeper will stop by this thread with more info.... :)

Its a lined burrfish. See my post on "webb burrfish" in this forum for the scientific name.

I just bought my guy last week. Luckily for me he accepted "dead" food immediately, even treated with IP meds. I'm hoping to get the parasites under control relatively quickly.

From what Ora told me, it should get to about 10", and should be in a 75 or larger tank. Biggest problems as you said are getting them to eat, and treating the parasites that they are loaded with.

It's a Chilomycterus schoepfii. Getting them to except food and internal parasites are the two main difficulties in keeping them.

Right, they are great alternatives to porc puffers, but not nearly as hardy. Once they get used to their surroundings they are just as social as porcs, and if treated for their IPs and convinced to feed they are great fish. Unfortunately many don't make it in aquariums because the IPs kill them or they never accept dead food.

Prevent unnecessary deaths due to disease- quarantine ALL new additions at least 4 weeks in a separate tank before adding to your main display tank!

Hilly, I absolutely agree. I'll be getting one in the distant future, too bad it can't be sooner.

Definitely a chilomycterus schoepfi. Deworming is a must for any chance of survival in the home aquarium. Quarantining is also mandatory - not only for pathogen control but also for getting the puffer adjusted to living in a glass box and accepting prepared food in a stressfree environment. (no other tankmates and especially ones that are not naturally encountered ).

Best of luck.
