Takifugu oblongus
Takifugu oblongus
what can you guys tell me about this beautiful fish. the Takifugu oblongus or "zebra " puffer is one i am considering I know that they can be agressive and get to about 12" anything else?
They are not very commonly kept as pets. I would suggest doing a forum search for "fugu" I know their are at least a couple of people that have posted on them in the past. If I recall, they have a reputation of not being very hardy in aquaria.

Jake, You are thinking of the ocellatus. They are the ones that have poor survival rates in captivity. Fugu puffers can be kept in BW but are best kept in SW.
Oblongus seem to prefer room temperature (18-22C or 64-72F), pH 76.5-8.5 (aragonite sand substrate is recommended), bright light, 200-400l tank, heavily decorated, eats live or frozen foods, difficult to keep (not for the novice).

You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

hi,
that species is one of those getting so big and so poisonous that japanese people eat them in restaurants. while they get about 40 cm big the tank should in my opinion have at leats 1000 liters. they should be kept in marine water but because of being kept in freshwater in the shops you should start with freshwater and then slowly change to seawater.

Oh yeah, I forgot they were the fugu folks eat in Japan. Guess I'll be finding a lot more about that if I go for that documentary.
