Yippee, yay, I Got some salt today

I was finally able to get some sea salt today. Unfortunately I still had to use the "marine" hydrometer that starts at 1.012 .

I took a gallon of water and measured it at a salinity of about 1.017 (didnt want to go too high incase the hydrometer is off) . It took just over a cup of sea salt to get the salinity this high. It seemed like a lot of salt since the box said to use half cup per gallon for full marine conditions.

I took that gallon and added another gallon of water to it. Then let it sit for a little while after a vigourous stirring. Finally added it to my ten gallon with the puffers in it.

This mixture should bring the tank salinity up near .0017 (give or take a little) and make my growing puffers much happier.

I also purchased a few ghost shrimp to serve as snacks for them. Are these FW type fish? Any way I tossed on in the puffer tank and the smaller puffers immediately gave chase. They are still too small to eat the shrimp and eventually gave up on it. The larger puffer seemed to ignore it. I came back later and couldnt locate the shrimp so it seems it either jumped ship or became lunch.

You would have been better off waiting until you got a proper hydrometer to measure correctly. Patience... your fish can wait a little longer for you to do this right.

Yeah I know but I didnt want to lose any more fish. One of my puffers is growing like crazy. He has to be nearly two inches already and I felt like even a little salt is better than none. He is probably only a month out of the LFS.

Plus he seems to be laying around on the bottom the past couple days and I am scared to lose him.

I plan on going down to the pet store tomorrow and have them check my water and compare the calibration of my hydrometer.
