Tips on catching wild puffs

Post by UncleFugu »

Anyone else on this forum own some puffs they caught themselves? They are suitable for brackish and marine environments. If you live on the east coast of Australia you can catch them easily in shallow estuaries with an aquarium scoop net, a bucket and lots of patience! The best way to do it is stand in water 10 - 25 cm (4 - 8.5 inches) deep (the best time to come is when the tide is moving fast) and stand still. It won't be long before they literally come to you on the current. Then, once they are close enough... take a plunge for them! Note - try to find a place where the estuary is shallow across its width - they can't escape as fast. Always remember to quarantine them for two weeks!

Cheers,

It's legal alright, and yes, in Queensland is where I catch my puffs (Enoggera/ Breakfast Creek in Brisbane to be exact). I catch Tetractenos hamiltoni. But thanks for the legality concern.

Cheers,

P.S. your tank journal's pretty cool.

It's real fun. Are there any puffs in the Thames/Creeks in London?
