Feeding SAp scallops

Post by MPH »

Hi Everyone,

I have recently purchased two SAPs and have just found this forum so hello! :D

I was just wondering if anyone had tried to feed their puffers 'Queen Scallops' (Chlamys opercularis....... i think)? The reason I ask is that I have got hold of a few small queen scallops, and from reading this forum it appears they would eat pretty much anything 'molluscy'.

I was just wondering if anyone knew any reason not to give them a try?

Any help/ advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

As long as they are raw and non coocked, i dont see why not. My Puffer will demolish shrimps, prawns, cockles, mussel, snails the lot...even the odd human finger (when the silly human isnt paying enough attention)

Snails are a must for SAP's from what ive read, they will also probably need dental work once or twice yearly....

Im sure Boxermom will attest to that when/if she sees this :)

Scallops are fine, but mussels are better. You see, the algae-filled stomach is the key part, because like other predators these fish will extract significant nutrition from the "chyme" inside the gut. That's why cats eat the guts and livers of things they kill, rather than the bits that seem yummy to us like the wing muscles.

As DarkEntity says, snails are important with this species. The teeth can grow quite quickly. Crunchy foods like woodlice and whole shrimp will help, too. My SAPs have a particular fondness for the swimmerets ("paddles") at the back of large shrimps.

Thanks alot for your replies!

I have tried them with the scallops, but they didnt seem particularly interested in them. Will give them another go some other time, as they seem to eat everything else that goes in the tank!

Thanks,

Matt
