I need some advice on lighting and basic needs of dwarf puffers. I recently found a 40 gallon acylic tank with built in trickle filter at the flea market ($25! goes great with my 80 gallon tank and stand for $40) I have had very good results in my fresh (and reef) tanks using trickle filters with "live rock" for nitrate reduction. Denitrification depends on the size of the pores, not so much the nature of the water. Aquacultured or wild collected porous rock should already have denitrification bacteria for SW. For BW or FW these bacteria would have to be developed in the setup, as SFAIK they are not offered commercially, but they will develop just as they do in plenums or coil denitrators or in the commercially available bacterial substrates such as Ehfisubstrat.
