Biofilms happen much faster than several years Neale, but other than very shallow beds get helped by the relative anoxia with depth and associated acidity there - it helps mobilize coral minerals a bit.
For light BW I always use RFUG with thinish substrates, and do full-depth vacumm regularly just to help keep things stirred up a bit. I also expect the aragonite I use to decrease in volume over time.
