Min tank requirements

These aren't just numbers we're pulling out of our head. Why not just go by the recommendations of tried & true long-term pufferkeepers? We broke the rules & our puffers suffered for it. Why should others have to?

In the off chance there is more to be contributed to the discussion, I will try and redirect it back on topic
I am not promoting the "breaking of rules" or challenging precedents, set for single or dual specimen tanks in the hands of entry level hobbyist.
I was hoping for free exchange of ideas of how practices change as tank sizes increase, and as one experience evolves (we had a good start, and perhaps that is all there is to be said).
My intent was to add to the education of beginners, provide direction to intermediates, and allow those that have kept larger #'s of puffers in larger tanks to provide insights.
As a newbie, I view the information on this site as a "bible".
Can the boundaries be pushed? I would imagine so, but I have a problem with "as long as they are willing to live with the consequences". It's the fish, not the owner, that lives with the consequences.
The people here are very knowledgeable and I'd hate for a fish to suffer because the boundaries were pushed. We've all observed or seen pictures of inadequate fishkeeping and it ain't pretty.
While it was a good thread and excellent food for thought, I'd still hate to see the fish suffer the consequences.

I think this is a wonderful thread. Thank you Peregrine for starting it. It was quoted earlier.
One thing I have noticed here is how you get slammed about tank size as soon as you say anything about your puffers. I understand how hard it can be. I have fancy goldfish (and mod a goldfish board) and people think they belong in a bowl!! I so think you might keep more people here if you are a little nicer about it. Find out what they have and what they are planning to do. Yes, I have 5 f8's in a 10g tank but I also do every other day wc's as I stated in my first thread about them. I also do tests everyday for the first month on any new tank so I know the numbers and what needs to be done. I have posted here that I have over 20 tanks and am building a fish room. This isn't a fish hobby for me but an addiction!
I have 4 f8's in a 20L now. ( I agree about longer tanks btw) They are fine with no aggression but I am still moving them into a 30g soon. I check their fins and how they react to each other everyday. To me that is what a fish keeper does. With this tank I do wc's at least twice a week. I have a part time job (12 hours a week) so am able to spend the time or I wouldn't have so many tanks. I do wc's everyday, lol, but I am one of the strange ones since I like doing them. There is something about seeing the poo and gunk leave and good, fresh water coming in. The only thing I dislike about this hobby is cleaning filters.
I'm not sure I'm going to be putting them all together. If I do it will probably be a 75g and it would be a species only tank. I was curious that more people don't keep a number of them together. I just might now so I can see what happens.
Please don't take what I have written wrong. It is hard on boards since you can't see the person. I don't want to offend anyone. I do think you guys have the best information here on puffers and can tell you have done a lot of work on them. I thank for you that because now my babies are benefitting.

I am a experienced hobbist and that is why I come here. I didn't know a lot about puffers so thought to come and ask people who keep them. I try to keep my fish in the best possible environment as possible and who better than other people who feel the same?To me, the figures given for minimum tank size are not aimed at experienced and fully capable hobbyists. Each such a person does know (or should if they deserve the label) what they can manage - even if the fish is a puffer. They may or may not follow those guidelines at their own discretion. If they get in trouble after ignoring these figures, they should be able to figure out what their problem is and how to correct it. Those folks are not the average individual posting here or at other speciality forums.

Peregrine, while I understand your reasoning for the discussion, therein lies danger IMO. How many times have we seen newbies come here for advice and despite being given valid information regarding the care of their fish, they completely disregard the advice and do whatever they want. And that's fine, no one can stop them. But the danger lies in those same people reading a thread from a well-experienced puffer keeper discussing his/her success at keeping 8 DPs in a 10g tank and thinking its okay for them to do so, not realizing or caring about the precise conditions that it took the experienced person to achieve success. I've seen several times already where it was suggested to someone not to keep certain puffers together, pointing out that experienced puffer keepers have kept them together for a couple of years only to have them turn on each other with devastating results, then have the person turn around and say 'but see, they were fine for x years, I'm going to try it anyway.'
You can tell a newbie asking if they can keep a Figure 8 for life in a 10g tank that its not adviseable but has been done by someone with lots of experience, but ime, many newbies will just see the "it can be done" part and ignores the rest. Isn't it better, then, to just say "No, we don't advise that, we recommend 15g minimum?"

Ok...I give up...I should have let this die..as was my intent with my last post (on page one)...until I saw the direction veer off onto a less than constructive tangent (as Rocker put it).
I, in all honesty, without any "sour grapes", or hostility ask the the admins/mods to just delete the thread...Perhaps as RTR states...it is a waste of effort...
