puffers colors

Post by fishlover420 »

I have green spotted puffer. I have had him for 6 months he is in a 10 gal tank by himself. He lately seems like the bottom of his belly turns a dark brown color and his sides, but then he can turn white again real quick. He does the tail curling thing but i thought that was normal. I am also wondering if anyone knows what kind of snails to buy him,,, Is there a certain kind of snail or mussel or clam. I cant find any and he is sick of blood worms and he is now excepting his shrimp frozen of course. any ideas on this and some fish store advice

He's probably feeling claustrophobic - he needs a tank 3 times the size you have him in. Your first priority should be getting him some more space.

Have you checked the water parameters? Is the tank cycled? How big is he? What type of filtration? Freshwater or brackish?
We need to know a lot more info to help you.

As far as snails, you should really set up a small snail breeding tank to give him a constant supply, but for now you can go to your LFS and buy some snails (ramshorns or pond snails) that are about the size of his eye.
Keep them in a small tank and feed them algae pellets or old flake food so that they are full of nutrients when your puffer eats them, and feed them to him as much as possible, both for nutritional needs and to keep his teeth trimmed down.
