Howdy all just a quick one i have been offered a tetraodon palembangensis by a regular at the shop i work in,being a newbie i have checked on the pufferpedia for info and after checking i have declined his offer as i can only provide a 30g tank instead of the minimum 40g what do you guys think could i squeeze it in? or should i let my head rule and still say no ?

Is it a 30g UK cos that would make it 36G US. Whats the tank dimensions. Could be worth a punt if the dimensions match up.

Its 30-18-15 120L 26g or 30US g dont really think its big enough myself its a lovely fish though about 15cm atm.

I make that 35US g, it's close but the Palembang isn't my thing so I would wait for the Palembang owners to respond. Width and height is fine, but I didnt think they were that active so maybe the length could work for one.

its hard to work out really because the fish itself doesn't swim about too much as far as I know and according to the pufferpedia so if you think like that then swimming space isn't too much of a problem. However the figure is there for a reason so I would reserve judgement till the other more knowledgable bods offer their opinion

If the tank is 35g US and swimming room isn't a huge issue it should be alright IMO. As always, this is assuming a singleton, good filtration and weekly water changes, proper care, etc etc

I wouldn't put mine in that small of a tank. He's pretty active at night when the lights are off and he kicks into hunting mode.

My juvenile Palmbang's was in a 30x12" fooprint tank when I QT'd him (with a 24X12" footprint reverse light cycle veggie filter), or in other words a nominal US 20-long + nominal US 15 filter, so nominal US 35 gallons with only 2 1/2 square feet of swimming space. They do move around a bit, especially in the dark, but also during the day in my heavily planted tank. I was much more comfortable when I got hin over into his home nominal US forty gallon 48x12" tank. That 4 square foot tank is not a lot bigger than the 30x15" or 3 1/8 square foot tank mentioned. I do not have enough experience with that fish to say if it is a critical difference.

It seems that though it may "be OK" its far from ideal. Go buy a bigger tank

Thanks guys, think im going to decline his offer dont really want to have it cramped and a bigger tank is a no go [not enough brownie points with the wife for another 1] should have some pics of my new tank soon just sorting out a digital camera.
