Setting up a new 6ft tank!!!

Hey there! im new to this site and i decided to join because my mate is moving and i'm getting his 6ft tank! Good Times!
Anyways i've looked at different species of freshwater puffers and i've decided to get some dwarf puffers as you can keep them in groups :D
I'm not new to fishkeeping but i'd still like to know how many i could keep
I dont know how many liters it is but it's definatly 6ft.
I also want to know how to set it out.
i've thought about using floating plants to help break up eyelines but i'm not sure about caves ect. So any advice would be great!

Oh and i've got a small 70 litre tank i'm gonna use for snail breeding. :D

1 Dwarf Puffer per 5 gallons. What are the other dimensions of the tank and we'll be able to tell you exactly.

Hey thanks :)

I'm not too sure of the diameters but its about 6ft long, 2ft wide and 2.5ft tall. Thats got to be alot of water! lol

i dont want it to be super packed with little puffers so i'll make it semi-planted tank. What do you think of that?

That tank is gonna be 187UK/224US Gallons. With the 5 gallon rule you could keep 40+ Dwarf puffers in there.

The puffers will enjoy a planted tank.

I'm in wiltshire so thats 187 gallons!
i think 40 puffers is a bit too much :shock:
i'll keep it down to about 20 at most
That could be about 5 males to 15 or so females!
Could have a little breeding thing goin on here! lol

you may have trouble planting a tank that deep, you will need tall plants for that one and bright lighting, what equipment comes with it?

Hey there, thanks for the reply :)

Im not sure of the makes of the equipment but i do know its a full setup! with spare bulbs, a backing (which cost 150 in itself!) and full of fish! not too sure which ones but from a photo there seems to be 2 BIG knife fish (any ideas how much i can get for them?)

I should have it within the next two weeks so i'll update this then

On the plus side my i work part-time at my lfs! so i can pull some strings and get all of my plants and puffers for a trade with the knife fish lol not too sure wot they stock in the way of tall plants but i could get some ordered in?

I'm sure the lfs could order you some in if you tell them the name of the plants you want.
Alternatively have a look on ebay, there are a few good suppliers on there who can get them a lot cheaper than any lfs I have found and I have never had a problem.

Have a word on here and see who can recommend a few tall plants.

If you can talk to your manager he may let you take the snails from the tanks in the shop where you work to start your snail tank off too!

Have a look for vallisnera americana I have 6plants of it my tank and its about 2metres in length, plenty big enough for your tank. I put the success of its growth down to rabbit pooh fertiliser :D I ahve an article on my forum of an experiment I performed a while back 8)

Thanks alot! I've looked on a couple of websites and i have a couple of plants in mind that should be no problem getting in the shop :D

Oh and you read my mind about the snails! I work in a massive fish house and spend half my time scraping mini snails from the tanks! :shock:
