Yeah I read somewhere that it helps to just cut down the algae by giving a break during the day. I still have some but in my community tank it is nearly non existent.

Algae is pretty rampant in my tank, as i have no real plants (yet) -- plus, there is about an hour every day that the sun sneaks across the apartment and graces the tank with its algae-growing rays
Its the sun thats the main culprit. I have tried a break in the photo period and the lights on for 12 hours straight and found there to be no difference at all. I think the key is live plants if you can keep them or more water changes
