this seems to be an monotrète cochinchinensis, or how most of people still call them: tetraodon cochinchinensis. its the point, that the picture ist still showin a large blotch under the dorsal fin area, which turgidus does not have.

What diagnostic trait does distinguish the two species? Is it only the ocellus?
Btw. the M. turgidus shown on your hp http://www.aquaristik-kugelfisch.com/ also seems to show a ocellus-like-blotch surrounded by a paler area. The only difference I see in the latter picture and the picture in this threat is that "your" T. turgidus has ess background between the spots.
However I agree, that T. turgidus following Kottelat should not have an ocellus.
hi, my pair of cochinchinensis loves only living food like fish, moskitolarvae and snails. they will take also frozen food but do not like it that much. heard of someone that she has a cochinchinensis eating only at night in total darkness. she was thinkig the fish was not eating but than saw it at night when she was watching the fish at night with a flashlight.

My cochinchinensis is a very sociable little puffer...swimming to the front of the tank from his cave to greet us whenever we go near! He's very personable, but it took him a month or two to settle into his tank, so give him some time Keep trying, I hope he starts to eat soon. Have you tried crushing up some snails and giving them to him?
Last night was the day id been hoping for, for 8 days. My little fellow ate some Tiger Prawn (hurrah). Also my Eheim 2232 arrived so that was installed. The little chap now has a seriously over filtered tank.
Got up this morning and he seemed much more active and has got some of his colour back again

Im a happy Puffer owner, with a Puffer who is slowly but surely getting his colours back and appetite
If anyone has problems with not eating Puffers, then eventually the Garlic dip with tiny pieces of food tempted the chap to eat, last night he took bigger pieces with no garlic, im going Snail hunting this weekend so hopefully he will eat them aswell

I would have to agree. After looking over the photo and then looking at my M. turgidus I'd have to say they do not look the same. Originally I thought they looked the same. My M. turgidus does not have that ocellus. That's the only thing that is different between my fish and your fish. It probably is a coch.
When i first picked up the little chap i was going by the 2nd picture in the Coch section of the pedia....he seems to be very similar to mine, yet the first image in the same section looks nothing like mine.
Keep trying, I hope he starts to eat soon. Have you tried crushing up some snails and giving them to him?
