Crayfish concern!
Crayfish concern!
I have been searching for crayfish for my fahaka for a while now. I found some over the weekend that are small and seem diseased. They have little white dots on their heads. The dots seem to be located mostly around their face between their eyes and near the antenna. I was concerned about these dots because I have never seen them on the crayfish I have gotten previously. Does this sound like a disease? If so is it treatable? Has anyone else seen this?

Sounds like it could be ich or something like that. Whatever you do, whenever feeding live critters to your fish, you should quarantine them for a minimum of 2 weeks, 4 is better.

I have seen crayfish in stores with what look like really tiny elongated ovals forming a beard or mane of some sort on the side of the head or other places on the head, I had always assumed it was some other creatures egg casings, which would hatch and either swim away or burrow into the crayfish and eat it, but I have no idea why I think they look like eggs. Probably nature shows where similar looking things are layed on caterpillars by a flying insect. If that's what they are, scraping them off and washing them away would fix the problem.
If you want to feed crays to your puff the best thing to do is breed them yourself, they're very easy to breed and that way you'll be sure there's no parasites or diseases on them.. You should NEVER be putting wild caught animals in your tank without at least a 4 week quarantine and a comprehensive anti-parasite/bacteria/fungus treatment, otherwise you could be introducing anything...
