Bought an abei a couple of days ago. He act a little weird some times, but he looks healthy.

I wonder what to call him.

Are they in the same tank or are they separated by a tank divider?

Yes, I would be very careful keeping this species together. Keep a close eye on them.

They are together. I've kept an close eye on them for several weeks now, and they don't chase each other at all. Maybe it's a pair? I don't know. All I know is that they are friends.

I wouldn't consider "several weeks" as any indication of the long term success of keeping them together or thinking that they are friends. Once they become acclimated to their new home and surroundings, things can change at the drop of a hat. Even after years of being together, puffers have been known to turn on each other and kill their tankmate they had been friends with for so long.

How big is the tank? Are there any other tank mates?

The tank is 200l. No other tank mates. I know things can change, but as long as it works, I intend to keep it this way. If there should be any problem, I just move one of them. It's as simple as that.

I am no expert, but as long as they both are healthy, why is it a problem keeping them together?

How can I find out about mating if I don't put two of them together. How do I know I got a pair if I don't try? And why does these two T. Abei get along? I know they are aggressive.

All I know is what I see.

No problem keeping them together but experienced members here have had one abei kill another. Just concerned the same doesn't happen to yours.

Unfortunately, most puffer deaths occur in the dark, when you can't watch them. If you want to breed an aggressive species, then you house seperately but next to each other & watch for spawning behavour. You put them together only for spawning & seperate immediately afterwards. Either leave the eggs with the male or remove the eggs entirely.
