These are not contantly active fish for me either. periods of activity and periods of rest/napping seem to alternate routinely. As best I can remember, two of the three I have kept spent a good bit more time resting than swimming. The third was more active, but still probably close to 50:50.

My Fahaka is about 6 inches and it never buries itself in the gravel, day or night....... He's always swimming around everytime I see him and only sits for a while after consuming a large amount of food or when I turn off all the lights. IMO, my Fahaka is the most active and personable fish I've owned, more than my cichlids and serrasalmus piranhas. I'm not sure what he does during the day while I'm at work but he's ALWAYS very active when I see him.
My mbu is like that, he is constantly on the move. I think he sleeps pretty much when i do. He starts yawning at about 10ish which is lights out, he'll then carry on swimming about when i go up to bed.
If i get up in the middle of the night he's usually settled at the bottom of the tank and is normally still there when i get up for good at bout 7am. As soon as the blinds are open he knows its time to get up and he's away!!!
On the rare occasions he does sleep when i'm in the room, any slight movement tends to get him going so i actually find myself crawling around so as not to wake him!!!!
I do believe i may be in need of some kind of psychiatric help!!
