Mbu puffer

Hi, i recently purchased a young Mbu (about 2 inches). I'm just quarinting him at the moment. But He will be moved up to my spare 1000g tank soon (maybe even my 1750g but i gotta move some fish around first). Just wondering on your opinions about tankmates. Hes eating well and seems happy enough. The filter (on the "small" tank) is a 6x2x2 sump i converted.

I also wanted to know what setup you recommend. Most likely lake tang. since that is where they come from.

Any suggestions would be good.

Oh and just so I don't get any of the water quality tips etc (even though they are valuable information) I have 12 years fishkeeping experience, mostly rift lake and american cichlids and I also work in a fish store, so i know all about that kinda stuff, despite the fact im only 16.

Great to hear you are housing properly! You have a 50/50 chance that it will accept tank mates. I'd start w/something that has some defense, like a larger pleco & then maybe some larger cichlids & faster-moving smaller fish.

Wow, you have a "spare" 1000g tank? I don't mean to be rude, but how did you manage that? I'm 17, and I have trouble keeping up with the costs of my 5 tanks.

I'm sure you'll love your new Mbu, I wish I could get one!

I saw three Mbu's at fish shop today, they were cool...the guy at the shop let us pet them...they were open to being touched...I was pleased.

wow. i wish i just had a spare tank...but a 1000g? or a 1750g!

T.mbu is native to the Congo basin and to Lake Tanganyika, so it is both rivierine and lacustrine.

Do they enjoy current at all? i was wondering about the possibilty of excersising riverine species like that with a light current running the length of the tank.

Mine certainly did, but IME most puffers do. All of the hunter-predators I have kept have had significant current, but also calmer areas for naps/sleep.

I was just kinda curious about that since i have a modestus puffer that is a compley maniac for movement around the tank....kinds figured maybe a small power head or putting a hang on the tank filter on one end might give him a little more natural feel.
