Obtaining / Care Of - Dwarf Puffers

First off, nobody in my area (texas coast, freeport/angleton/clute area) stocks these guys. Does anybody around the houston/missouri city area maybe know of a store that carries them?


Secondly, what can I do to help them get along? I plan on having two in a 12 gallon tank so space should be alright. Plants, obstacles, caves, I know. But can anybody with dwarf puffer experience suggest anything that I'm not aware of?

Have you tried your local yellow pages for all pet shops? I was quite suprised at some of the shops I've never even noticed before in al the years I've lived here.

As for your DPs, dont forget they need bloodworms. Also make sure your tank is cycled before the fish are put in because the puffs dont like high ammonia levels. (Although my GSPs survived a 6ppm spike ) So be on the safe side, do water changes every other day to keep things fresh.

I never saw any in my lfs's either. There is a small shop near me that will order fish for me. If the fish is available through his supplier, he can order it!
I have a lot of plants in my tank. I also got a couple small terra-cotta pots to use as caves (they don't go near them!). As long as you have a lot of plants (real or fake), they will be fine.

Odd...they avoid the small pots? I guess I'll fashion some small slate caves then, and double up on the plants. What types do you find work well in their tank? I've got cabomba(?) and anacharis, I think.

Hygrophila difformis, Anubias barteri var. nana, A. barteri, any compact swordplant, Sagittaria subulata, Cryptocorynes, etc. The stem plants that you have are fine also.
