New to puffers...

Post by rob newland »

Hey all, I have just been given the go-ahead to get a puffer tank. I am planning on getting a FW one but a brackish one if not. I have kept fish for ages but am new to puffers so if anyone can give me some useful tips I would appreciate it :). I will probably get my tank in a couple of months time when I have the money.

Welcome to TPF & the wonderful, fun world of puffers! Tank size would be the 1st question in picking a puffer. Are you interested in a really cool-looking puffer, that lurks in the sand, waiting for a meal to pass by to pounce on or an active hunter-seeker puffer, that swims around investigating every nook & cranny, looking for it's next meal?

Check out our Galleries, to see what different puffers look like. http://www.pufferlist.com has excellent profiles.

Hi, probably a 15-20gal due to size limits in my room. Any kind of puffer will do really I'm not too fussed. If brackish ones would be better than that's fine I can accommodate one of them just as well...
Thanks for the warm welcome,
Rob

Best tip I can give is research, research research. Then come here and ask whatever questions you have. Then research, research, research some more. :) You can never do too much research, IMO, and the more you learn before you get the puffer, the easier time you and your puffer will have and the happier you will both be. :)

The Aqualog book is a good read and has tons of great pictures. But I would also recommend doing lots of searches on the internet, as well as reading as many books on aquarium keeping in general as possible. There's a recent thread about books where you can get a good list to peruse.

Yeah, the Aqualog book is interesting, but for good practical info you won't find a better place than right here!

I think UK gallons are a little smaller than US gallons, so you might want to stick to smaller puffers. A lot will depend on what you can find locally, but a single Figure 8 (brackish), maybe with a few bumblebee gobies would make for a very interesting tank.

I think you might be very happy w/a figure 8 puffer in there.

I have 3 and am well over content!

But you will also have to be willing to setup a small snail breeding tank... Or atleast its a good idea... Really easy to do! This tutorial says a 10 gallon, but with so little fish, I use a 2.5 and it works exellently!
