T. Miurus / Congo Puffer Feeding Problem

Post by saqmaster »

Hi all,

This a dupe from the yahoo group, so i'll keep it short :)

I've had a T. Miurus now for about 2 years. He's only grown from 2" to 3" in the time i've had him. He only eats frozen bloodworm, he refuses to eat anything else (eg, frozen shellfish) even after starving him for a week! I don't really know what to do to get him on a proper diet.. any suggestions or experiences?

Thanks,

Stu

Have you tried garlic additives, or wiggling the food in front of the puffer to entice him into feeding?

I tried the wiggling, made no difference.. what's this garlic additive?

There are a few products, such as Garlic Extreme and Garlic Guard that can stimulate appetite. Try not feeding for several days before offering new foods.

I would feed a miurus of that age only twice a week. Even then expect them to not want one of those meals.

Isn't the amount you feed them relative to a) what you're feeding them and b) how physically large they are?

T. Miurus is a lurker and would not eat that frequently in the wild.

The amount of food should not be relative to what it is. You should feed them the same amount each time according to their age/size.
I tend to go by age as regards the frequency of feedings.A two year old puffer especially a lurker does not require a meal every other day IMO.
That is JME. Feed them to often and they will refuse it.

What size tank do you have him in? If he's not growing, the tank might be too small.

My congo is also picky... he likes bloodworms and ghost shrimp and will turn his snout up at just about anything else. I'm even raising pond snails in his tank! (I think he is eating a few of the snails... but only at a particular size or something. He leaves the big ones alone and there are little ones hanging out in the plants.)

I did get him to try krill using the string trick. He took a big bite, spit it out and then ignored the rest. (I'll have to try it again with garlic.)

I do get him to eat some other foods (mysis shimp or very small bits of krill) by mixing it with his bloodworms. Since he slurps his worms right out of my plastic turkey baster it is not hard to do... but he does sometimes spit the non-bloodworm food out. I usually have to net this uneaten food out if the SAE doesn't get it first.

I haven't tried clam/mussle meat since I don't imagine they are part of a lurker diet... I don't think clams would happen to just "wander by" :-)

Mine is about 2 and a half inches and I've had him a little under a year now... so about the same size as yours.

I feed him about three times a week... although he begs as much as any other puffer I've seen!
