F8's + GSP's + Coral..?
F8's + GSP's + Coral..?
I have 4 F8's and 2 GSP's all around 2 1/2 inches, I am resealing a tank for them to live the question is I have mostly African Cichlids and so I have alot of crushed coral for substrate, I also have a lot of awsome pieces of actual coral from my Diving experiences, the tank I am using for the puffers used to be a "dry" tank for my coral collection.....anyway the real question is can I set it up the way I had it as a "dry" tank for my puffers?, it looks absolutely awsome and would love to put them in there, but not if 1. the higher PH would harm them and 2. the coral would be a harmful environment due to the puffers softer skin?
and advise and experiences welcome.

sorry if I did not give enough info, but what I mean by "dry" tank is that it was a display tank for the Coral, it looks like a saltwater setup until you get real close and see it has no water in it....but as for the F8's and the SGP's getting along........they do and do fine together, maybe a freak of nature but they do get along just fine, in my case anyway but that is not the point, or the question..................
(if they did not I would have started another post)
anyway about the Coral, this IS coral that I have collected and is awsome , brain, finger , sponge ect......various colors..,
can I and should I use this outfit for my puffers?, they are slow moving so it seems they would not cut themselves on the coral, and can move around at will so I think the can get along fine in there, just want opinions on the fish really not where I got the Coral, so what if I bought it or collected it...that is not the point... the question about the fish is the point....
thanx for all input, (coral o fish) but I am concerned about the fish

It doesn't matter that they get along, they have entirely different water requirements. F8's fare best in low brackish (~1.005) and GSP's require full marine as adults.
As for the coral, I was wondering if you harvested live coral and let it die for a display. I'm curious. Please try to be polite on the forum

I am trying to be polite on the forum, I felt as if I was being interrogated on the Coral and not asked about the fish, I have had the Coral for around 8-10 years in this tank and I also understand about the needs of ADULT F78 & SGP's but they are not, I said they are 2 1/2 inches each so they are not at adult yet, and DO get along......everyone seems to be missing the point of the question..
Puffers + Coral = ???
PLEASE! no nasty or negative replies, just looking for answers from somebody that has tried this.
P.S.
I understand they will need more salt as they get older, and will do so, up to Brackish with the right perimeters, but again this is not the question........

Aright here's the deal. In general, LIVE corals are hit or miss with puffers, as they may or may not eat/kill it. Dead coral is decoration.
This is a puffercare site so we are interested in how you plan to care for them properly. Like I said, they may get along now, but not for long, and they have different water needs NOW, so they are not compatible.

OK, thanks for the info, it is dead coral but I thought that was clear when I said "dry" tank.....but anyway you seem to know alot about puffers and seem to be interested in this thread, but still have not really answered the question, and I am being nice....I really want help with this, I don't want to be scolded as a child just want an answer from hobbyist that are in the same same I am.

I though i did answer it...dead coral is a fine decoration, as long as it is free of contaminants.bombero wrote:OK, thanks for the info, it is dead coral but I thought that was clear when I said "dry" tank.....but anyway you seem to know alot about puffers and seem to be interested in this thread, but still have not really answered the question, and I am being nice....I really want help with this, I don't want to be scolded as a child just want an answer from hobbyist that are in the same same I am.
I understand 100% I love these fish, I Have 6 tanks in my house of African Cichlids and you know they are not for the weak at heart, I have had these fish for 15+ years and care for them in great detail...I was only asking on this site for information on something I thought they would know about, if you were to ask me about Cichlids I WOULD NOT chew your head off, but give you all the advise I could on them......................we are on the same page but don't have to be nasty about what we know.............

No one has been nasty, I think you're just feeling overly defensive. You need to understand that most of us are pretty aware of the problems that are happening because people are harvesting living corals from the ocean and deleting resources. Its a major concern. So when someone says that's exactly what they've done, that tends to get people's hackles up.
And just because you understood what you were saying regarding "dry tanks" doesn't mean the rest of us do. :p Personally, I've never heard the term before or even of the practice of filing an empty tank with dead coral for a display.

When you come here for help, you sorta have to expect an inquisition. Not because we're jerks, but because we want to help you resolve the problem at hand. Unfortunately, that requires full disclosure. Everything is suspect, and everything will be questioned. We nail down facts from there until we find the root cause and solution. Remember, diagnostics are inherently invasive. If we took things at face value, we would be making or accepting assumptions, and you know what they say about the word buttocks-u-me.
