I have always suspected that those folks who make such absurd statements just might be the same ones who add salt to their FW tanks...
But they may be the subgroup who thinks that bristlenose only live a few years. My adult male albino died recently, after 14 years in my tanks. But then he never had the advantage of salt addition or BW.
Of course... I said "high-end" wishfully thinking about how nice it would be to have a plec in the tank with my GSPs. I do not use salt in my FW tanks.
oh gosh darn, ma! - the little SOBs ended up eating my plants (even the Java Fern). I'm going to get rid of the plants soon, and redecorate with just rocks. Each puffer is in its own 13 G tank until then. Grrr...

Try some inexpensive stem plants in and from another tank, but beware of bits and pieces clogging your filter intakes. Puffers can be even messier with plants than with meaty foods.
