GSP and Ceylon

I had my ceylon and GSP in a tank for over a year without issues. The only issue was that the ceylon seemed to grow faster than the GSP, but they were still getting food and not fighting so I left them alone.

Then one day my GSP got a big nip out of his caudal fin... I set him up in his own tank the next day. You just never can tell with puffers.

The weird thing is that my ceylon has gotten really shy and my GSP has gotten really hyper and interactive; this is the opposite of how they behaved when housed together!

ok, i was reading a post for a different issue, when i came across the fact that the ceylons get to be 8in (we had thought 6in), i hadnt recalled seeing that anywhere before... but now i see it all over. at the time i came upon this, our ceylon was not eating, again. it seems he does this every couple of months for like a week, then we have to change his food. actually, we have to feed his something completely new (this time fresh clam). anyway, my question is, when do they NEED to be in a larger tank?

as you can see, they're about 2" at the moment and are in a 40g US breeder tank @ 1.011

we're looking to get them a 90g eventually, but dont have the monies for that, or the space really (small 2bed apt). i do understand that the sooner the better, and if i could, i'd have it. i dont want them to be stunted in growth though. and i'm wondering if you peeps think that maybe the tank size could be causing the not eating fits, as well?

Beautiful puffers! So small and cute!

I remember when my ceylon was that small *sniff*. He's the biggest puffer in the house now (he seems to grow faster than our lined puffer who will _eventually_ be larger).

thank you. the GSP has actually caught up to him in size, and seems to be passing him slowly, but im guessing Lon is about to hit a growth spirt soon, since he's around that size. which is part of my concerns.

My ceylon out grew my GSPs in no time. He use to be a half inch smaller then the GSPs and when the GSPs look like they grew so did the ceylon... but thats all changed. The ceylon is now a half inch larger then the GSPs already!

Moving them to a larger size tank now wouldnt hurt. 75 gallon would house them nicely IMO. But the bigger the better!

its the tail end of a shrimp. we get them in the sea food section as a treat for them.

Tihsho: i know it couldnt hurt, and i wish i could do it now. but we really dont have the money or space.

any advice as too if we NEED to do it now, or will they be OK for a couple more months, until we can afford the money/space to move them would really help settle our minds.

I think you will be alright for a few months. Stay on the wc's though, and try to get a larger tank ASAP. Look for used ones on craigslist.

Well in either case you really neeed to get looking for a larger tank, but I think you have a *little* bit of time to play with. I already found a beautiful corner desk and wall unit for free on freecycle, and I'm sure tanks will come up.

we do weekly water changes of 15-25% a week and then around once a month we do a 45-55% and re-arrange the layout to keep them busy. they tend to pick very similar hang outs each time, and then they steal them from each other. once in a while they'll spend a day or two pushing eachother around, in a sort of dominance dance, but they've never bitten one another. hopefuly that will stay the case.

if it came down to it, we have a 30g that we're repairing, but that was going to be a fully planted tank for our SA. when we got Tiger (SA), it was under the notion that he was a brackish fish, after we found out he wasnt, we lowered the tank he's in to 1.003-4 for him, but it houses 2 f8s, so we cant go any lower. we figured that have the GSP and Ceylon in a 40 for a while was a better choice then keeping a SA in brackish. any ideas would be helpful, thanks everyone.
