I use airstones to aerate my new water before water changes & it helps mix salt as well. Of course, I have well water and it may need degassing/aeration more than some tap water, but I almost always have airpumps aerating change water and/or brine shrimp. No airpumps for tanks, though.
btw, we had power failure this morning for about 2 hours and I tried some cheap battery powered pumps bought at bigals and they were inadequate junk. Can anyone recommend a quality portable battery-operated air pump?

I generally rinse the whole powerhead every month or so, but I really don't think it is needed that often. I do it when I open up the housing to check on the impeller. I had one get long blonde hair wrapped around it (can't blame that on anyone but me!), lock up, and blow a fuse in my apartment.
They don't gum up IME in SW/BW, so long as they stay submerged/operating and to not dry and become sticky.

Several WAMAS members are planning a battery backup build party. The backup uses one or more 12V auto batteries, power inverters, relays, (etc.) and will power your tank for several hours This may be more than you need/want but I can pull the parts list and schematic for you if you want me to.ChesapeakeSwellfish wrote:After power failure on a hot day, I'm rethinking my use of the crappy little D-cell battery aerators.
Any opinions on using 12v deep cycle batteries and livewell aerators in a power failure? Other options?

Power inverter and a long extension cord Very inexpensive and you can find just about any hardware store, walmart probably the cheapest or auto motive Store. Iv gone through 4 hurricanes and 1 which was about a week power loss. Not a pretty site when you have to sit in a house with dead silence. Seeing I have no room for a generator, the power inverters come in handy.

The battery backup that the local group is building will trickle charge and come on automatically in the event of a loss of power. One member built one for himself and was running a test this weekend. Last I heard, the backup ran a Mag 9.5 on a single battery for four hours and was still going. I may have to join the next build party...
