May if you're lucky but the babies would get eaten as soon as they appear, and they would eventually be wiped out, so better to breed them seperately IMO

Ramshorn snails do not eat live and healthy plants, that is not an issue. But the puffers will nip and harass the snails to the point of death, leaving the bulk of the body unreachable to them to rot in the tank.

It is never practiccal to co-house predators and prey. The relationship just does not work that way.

I can definitely vouch for this. My two DPs have harassed every snail I've put into the tank with them except the nerite snails currently in there. They ate the antenna of all of the others, as well as chewed up the foot of a very large mystery snail about half the size of my fist.

I did answer your question. I wrote:

"turtledove, I see no problem with adding the adults to your DP tank, the only problems are a) They are likely to be picked at by your DP's, and most importantly b) To really get breeding going, you have to over-feed and over-change the water of your snail breeding tank. Not recommended for your puffers though!"

, I misread that. I thought you were meaning that the babies would get picked off.

I wasn't wanting them to breed proficely, just some to give the puffers something more to do. If they're gonna pester the adults like that, I won't bother.

Thanks for the help guys....just need to get the tank ready now.

My three DPs, in a 29-gallon tank with community fish, snails, shrimp, and plants, have gone through about 200 snails in a few months (maybe four or five). They nip at the foot until the snails eventually die. Nerites and porcupine snails have been fine. Large apple snails (2.5" across) are pretty much left alone. My ramshorn snails, although they get nipped at, manage to lay eggs before they eventually die at 1.5".

When talking about pond snails, are these "Lymnaea Stagnalis"?

I also found "Sphaerium Corneum" - pea mussels when trawlling about the internet.....would these be suitable food?
