It may just be that Woland's picture is of an alternative morph, as Pyratt suggested, so the one on waterwolves.com doesn't do justice to the uniqueness of Woland's specimen, but does, in fact, do justice to the species in terms of being an average specimen. Think about it—isn't Woland's pustulatus (the one posted on this site) the only specimen you have ever seen that looks quite like that?

Just to clear things up.
The T. pustulatus pictured in the gallery have never been in my care.
The Pufferforum member Hoover owned the specimen.
I believe that Hecter (as the fish was named) just showed up at his LFS as an unordered part of a batch directly imported African fish.
It was a mature specimen.

And; I most certainly believe that I will have to take a trip to Congo soon...
:P

Hallo Sean,
that´s not Tetraodon pustulatus.
This are young Tetraodon lineatus.

I would tend to agree with Jupp that they are T. lineatus. I have never seen a juvi pustulatus, though, so I can't say with certainty.

Well, lisalisa and Jupp, please see the photograph of T. pustulatus at Fishbase: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... pustulatus

Notice the red spots on the body at the link Sean posted, and compare both the eye position, what the eye looks like, and the entire mouth region of both what Sean believes to be a T. pustulatus and the Fishbase specimen photograph.

The only thing, in my opinion, going for your opinions that it's a T. lineatus are the stripes. I think it might very well be a T. pustulatus.

I wouldn't rely too much on Fishbase for identification of puffers. If indeed that is a pustalatus then on a trip last year to a wholesaler I did infact see 50+ young pustalatus. They were shipped in as lineatus, priced as lineatus, looked a cross between the two but the deciding factor was that no one who bought one has claimed them to be pustalatus nor indeed the shop which did keep a couple for a while on the chance that they were pustalatus. They did however turn out to be lineatus. Another forum has members with similar photos boasting them to be pustalatus but the claim has gone awfully quiet now when ask for further updates.

Look here as well: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... e=lineatus

Another very similar looking picture of a T. lineatus.
As I said, I am not pustulatus expert, but those pics certainly look like young t. lineatus to me, and much like mine did when young, minus some of the more difined spots.

Hallo,
if you compare the pictures of Tetraodon pustulatus in the Puffer Gallery with your " Pustulatus"- photos you will see that your "Pustulatus" is Tetraodon lineatus.
KÖLLE alaaf !
