Snail Question

Post by mdnitesky »

Does it matter what type of snail is fed to GSPs other than not feeding them the malaysian ones? Arent ramshorn and pond snails fresh water, or doesnt it matter? Thanks :)

Those snails are easy to breed, and great to feed to GSP's. Snails rarely live to hit the bottom of the tank, so being FW doesn't matter. Make sure to remove any that the puffs miss, though.

Occasionally a puff will be looking away when you drop in the snail and the snail lying on the bottom of the tank attracts no attention. When this happens, I reach in with a x-large forceps and grab the snail and let it drop again. Mine now recognize the forceps as part of the large trained feeding machine.

I have a gladiator system with my tanks, if the snail can foil the puffers for over an hour then he/she will retire to my 20G planted tank. Same with ghost shrimp. If the ghost shrimp can outsmart my puffers for a night, then they get to be retired.
