What would you recommend as the minimum tank size for a porc. puffer or a dog-face puffer?

Porc (as an adult) about 100 gallons and about the same for a dog face, though it will depend on the species. Some dogface's would better be suited in 125 IMO.

If I had one that was about 3 inches long, how long would it be before he'd need an upgrade?
(This is all hypothetical, I don't actually have a puffer or even a saltwater tank)

IMHO I would buy the adult size tank to house a puff straight off. I've found it much easier to keep fish and or puffs in their adult tank from the get-go, then you don't have to worry about upgrading unless you absolutly need to or feel like its time for a larger tank. A 3 inch dog face with LR and possible tankmates should be kept in atleast a 75 gal.

I would go bigger than 100 gallons for a porc. Remember, they grow to 19"! Many tanks do not allow the depth required for the puffer to turn easily.

100 at a minimum LL, If it was me (which I need to do aswell with my porc) it would be a straight 180 with LR and no tank mates.

a 125 at least is recommended for a porc, a 100 gallon tank i have never seen dimensions on so i wouldnt know , however i heartily agree that a 6ft by 2ft tank (height doesnt matter as much) is the minimum requirement.

Jager, the only 100 I've seen was manufactured by Oceanic and it seemed kinda ancient... But then again your 125 would more or less be 100 gallons worth of swimming space once you add some significant amounts of LR.

I really doesn't take a significant amount of rock to fill 25-gallons. A 210 gets my vote.
