Don't buy them, they dont belong in aquariums.

There are many species of "fugu" puffers, all belonging the the Takifugu family. Which one were you interereted in? Check out http://www.pufferlist.com.

Depends on the species you are looking for. There are a few species which can be found under the common name of 'fugu' and most from what I can remember get fairly large.

Perek, there is a yes and no to your statement... They do not belong in average aquariums, but they do great when kept in PROPER sized tanks which are failry large (atleast 180 gallons or so)

oh that is the puffer i am interested in, the one on pufferlist.com the Takifugu ocellatus, so i could keep this fish in a 55 gallon, but for desirabley larger

IMO I would atleast go for a 125 or so. These guys get fairly large and the larger the space the better. Remember if you decide to add LR be sure to have plenty of swimming room for the puff to have aswell.

Tisho - I have not heard of Fugus surviving in aquaria for more than a year(the ones with the orange coloration). They are the true fugu and as their name suggests they are the species that are consumed by japanese sushi-goers.

There are a few species that are eaten. Takifugu ocellatus is just one of them. The reason that not many specimins survive are due to a number of things:

#1 care in LFS
#2 treatment after arriving home (acclimation to higher SG tank)
#3 Lack of treating for IP's (internal parasites)

as well as a few others but those take the cake.

Who has kept these alive for an extended period of time? I have not heard a single success story.

There have been a few people. There is one person on this forum that has kept one alive for almost a year now.

Yes, I'm not disagreeing that the species is hard to keep. But there have been some sucess stories.
